Amreli:<\/strong> In an effort to reduce the increasing human-animal conflict in Gujarat’s Amreli district, the forest department has captured nearly 30 lions from the Gir East and Greater Gir regions. The large-scale operation has, however, drawn criticism from wildlife enthusiasts and conservation activists across the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to available information, around 30 lions have been caged from the Gir-Kantha and surrounding revenue areas, with wildlife lovers expressing concern over what they describe as a “mass capture” campaign carried out by the forest department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The captured lions include three from the Mahuva range, 12 from the Chaturi Gam area under the Khambha range, one from the Junasavar area near Savarkundla, six from the Jasadhar range, four from the Ghatiyan area of Bagsara, four from the Kovaya area of Rajula, and one from the Hindorana area of Rajula.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wildlife activists have warned that relocating a large number of these captured lions into the Gir National Park<\/a> could create territorial disputes and dominance-related conflicts among the existing lion population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They pointed out that every wild lion establishes and defends its own territory, and introducing new lions into occupied habitats could result in aggressive encounters and increased competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several wildlife conservationists have also questioned whether the provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act and all prescribed legal procedures were properly followed during the lion capture operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Concerns have additionally been raised over whether the forest department strictly complied with the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) while conducting the exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reports indicate that forest officials recently intensified efforts to capture wild lions across the Gir East and Greater Gir regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, local residents as well as wildlife enthusiasts are demanding a detailed explanation from both the state government and the forest department regarding the reasons behind the large-scale operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The incident has once again brought attention to the challenge of maintaining a balance between wildlife conservation, public safety, and adherence to wildlife protection laws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bhushan Pandya, a member of the Gujarat State Wildlife Board, also raised several concerns regarding the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking on the recent developments, Pandya said, “Those involved in the ‘lion show’ incident should receive the strictest possible punishment. If they are simply fined Rs 25,000 to Rs 50,000 and released, they will continue to benefit from such activities. They should instead face imprisonment.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He further stated, “Capturing lions on a large scale is not a permanent solution for their conservation. On the contrary, it may worsen the situation. Releasing captured lions back into the Gir forest could lead to territorial clashes with resident lions.
